Conrad Decker, the founder and owner of Decker's Nursery, began caring for trees in 1987 as a Tree Climber, in Princeton, New Jersey.
His desire to work on a diversity of properties brought him to Long Island in 1996. After working on properties throughout Long Island for 14 years the opportunity to purchase what is now Decker’s Nursery & Florist, became available.
As Conrad considered the “leap of faith” into the nursery he was still diagnosing landscape concerns daily. It was apparent that 80% of his diagnosis were related to improper planting techniques and improper post-care. His customers all thought they hired “professionals” to do the work and became frustrated with their losses or additional costs. It was apparent that a lot of wrong information was being disseminated; clients didn’t know who to believe.
This continuous occurrence helped Conrad develop his vision to create a Resource Center that provides accurate and sound advice on horticultural practices. He also became concerned with a surge of new “organic” products that were being promoted without any research or scientific data to support their claims. The desire to be environmentally responsible; was being exploited. Conrad believed that true horticulturalists practice organic methods religiously, without an emphasis on products.
“Wouldn’t it be great, if I could develop a business that’s provides a place for homeowners to get sound, accurate information regarding horticulture.” “We can assist them with information and guidance as well as offering services to do the plantings and maintenance.”
In 2010 Decker’s Nursery opened with the mission and vision that Conrad had for decades. “Your Horticultural Resource Center” remains the tag line and focus of the business today. As the business grows our mission has expanded to include all types of plant material. Annuals, Perennials, Tropical and Indoor Plants as well as his true love, ornamental trees and shrubs.
He continues to expand by having other experts around him to share their knowledge and experience.
The mission for the future of Decker’s Nursery is to get more plants, especially shade and ornamental trees in more landscapes and improve the “urban forest”. Each plant will be installed with strict adherence to “Planting Standards”. After being installed, every customer will be aware of the importance of care and maintenance; this will assure they remain assets for generations. Every customer will leave the nursery with enough knowledge to be successful.
There are (3) core values in the Decker household and business;
- Share information willingly and freely. Maintain a sincere desire to help others
- Do what you say you’re going to do!
- Operate the business so our message carries forward, in the future.
As Decker’s Nursery expanded and became Decker’s Nursery & Florist, Conrad’s passion to preserve trees on Long Island generated a subsidiary business - Decker’s Tree Preservation.
Decker’s Tree Preservation is the maintenance arm of Decker's Nursery where customers who require assistance with their landscapes or plant health care come to get help from the experts.
