Frequently Asked Questions

Plant Pottery & Planter FAQs

  • What are some of the different types of planters?

With planters, you can choose what speaks to you. But they are generally divided into three categories:

    • Traditional
    • Specialty
    • Novelty

Traditional planters include options like terra cotta, plastic, stone, wood and wrought iron. And are typically the most common and easily sourced.

Specialty planters, while more wide-ranging, are also typically easy to come by. For example, a specialty container may be designed to grow strawberries specifically, or containers that hang from a hook if you want to create a particular exterior design.

Novelty planters are another option. These come in decorative forms like busts, animals or shapes. Novelty planters are typically for aesthetic purposes, and this means that the interior of them are often small. If you prefer novelty planters, then we’d suggest you plant vegetation with shallow roots because they’re more likely to thrive in spaces that are confined. You can also make planters from recycled items. Consider using things like old wheelbarrows, rubber boots, bathtubs and leaky buckets. If you need ideas, visit us at Decker’s Nursery. We have a diverse selection, so you’re sure to find something that will complement your landscaping.

  • What are the different kinds of plant pots?

There are many different kinds of plant pots available. When choosing, consider the type of plant that you’ll placing into the pot. This means keeping in mind the drainage needs of the plants that you intend to put in your pots and where you want to place them. The four most common plant containers are:

    • Plastic garden pots

    • Clay pots

    • Resin pots

    • Cachepots

When shopping for pots, you’ll come across lots of plastic options. These are simple, affordable and easy to keep clean. You can get them in different colors and styles, so plastic garden pots are a good way to get the aesthetic look that you want.

Clay pots are formed using terracotta or porous red clay. These types of pots are usually heavier than other kinds of containers, and they come with a hole for water drainage in the base. Consider getting clay pots if you intend to plant vegetation that likes it dry such as cacti.

Resin is a heavier kind of plastic, and you may want this kind of pot if you’re searching for something that features a fancy design. Resin can be made to mimic stone. It is also available in a variety of textures and colors.

Cachepots are ornamental containers or pots. In most cases, they are made from ceramic, but you might come across some that are formed from plastic or metal. At Decker’s Nursery, we have all of these types of pots and more!

  • What is the difference between a pot and a planter?

Planters and pots are often used interchangeably, but there are a few differences. Knowing how they’re different will help you choose the right containers for your plants and landscaping ideas.

Plant pots tend to be round while planters are usually rectangular. Because of this, pots are typically designed for one plant and planters are meant to hold several. Planters are mainly used outdoors whereas plant pots are indoor/outdoor containers. If you have questions about a container, then just ask one of our experts at Decker’s Nursery. We can help you choose the best container for your space!

  • What are good plants for large pots?

If you have a large pot that needs a plant-based resident, then there are several plant types to consider. Agave is one option. It is perfect if you live in a hardiness zone that’s higher than a six or a seven. Also, agave plants are succulents, so they’re dramatic and forgiving if you don’t water them as often as you should.

Bamboo is another great plant for a large pot. While the plant can be a pain if you place it in your garden, it is great for a pot. Bamboo is even tough enough to winter in a pot. Dwarf trees, conifers and Japanese Maples are other great plants for large pots.

  • What are the easiest flowers to grow in pots?

The easiest flowers to grow in pots are annuals or bedding plants. These are plants that will live for just one summer, but they’ll remain in bloom the entire time. If you were to get perennials or bulbs, they would bloom beautifully. However, the blossoms would be gone in just a few weeks.

Flowers like ferns, African daisies and begonias are great options for pots. Pansies, petunias and zinnias are other easy flowers to grow in pots. These are hardy flowers that will add color and style to your exterior landscaping.

  • Do you need drainage holes in your pots?

Regardless of the type of plants you intend to grow in your pots, to keep your plants healthy, the pot needs drainage holes. A lack of proper drainage is one of the most common reasons that plants become unhealthy and die.

There are a few aquatic plants that like to hang out in water, but most plants need to swap oxygen and carbon dioxide. If the plant is sitting in water, then the liquid will close off air pockets in the plant’s soil. Without drainage holes, plants can get too much water. Also, it can be tough to determine this because the soil near the surface may feel dry while the soil near the base of the pot is wet.

  • What happens if a pot is too big for a plant?

When it comes to choosing a pot size for a plant, it’s important to get the right size. You want to avoid getting pots that are too big or too small. It may seem like a good idea to get a pot that’s too big to avoid crowding the roots. However, a too-large pot can also be bad for your plants.

When a pot is too large, it may hold more water in the soil than your plant needs. It can also take too long for the soil to dry out, which may cause mold to develop. Overly wet soil can also result in rot or root diseases. If you’re still unsure about size, then stop by Decker’s Nursery. Our staff will make sure that you get the right pot size for your plants.

  • What type of pot is best for indoor plants?

For indoor plants, the best pots are plastic or ceramic. Plastic pots are lightweight, easy to clean and affordable. A big benefit to plastic pots is that plastic doesn’t absorb water like clay. This means that you won’t need to water your plants as frequently. Plastic is durable, and it comes in a variety of colors and sizes, so you should be able to get the exact style that you need.

  • How are flower pots measured?

Centimeter or inch measurements usually refer to a flowerpot’s diameter. You can confirm this by stretching a tape measure from one side of the pot’s rim to the other. For depth, position the tape measure along the side of the pot and slide it to the ground. To determine the size of a rectangular or square planter, measure the container’s distance between the opposite rims. Do this for the length and the width. Some pots feature a volume measurement. Use this to determine how much soil it will hold.
