Frequently Asked Questions
Garden Statues & Fountains Frequently Asked Questions
What are some different types of garden ornaments?
The Asian tradition of decorating with ornaments outdoors is virtually timeless. Garden décor was also common in ancient Rome, Egypt, Greece and Persia.
Garden ornaments are as diverse as the cultures that inspired them, so your options are almost endless.
Here are a few examples to spark your imagination:
Fountains
The soothing sound of water creates a serene ambience. Fountains may be wall-mounted or free-standing.
We offer everything from contemporary to classic Italian Renaissance designs.
Birdbaths
Birdbaths require a little extra maintenance, but they serve as pleasing focal points and attract a variety of feathered friends.
Statues
Statues complement a garden’s natural beauty.
Likenesses of saints, angels, animals, mythical characters or even whimsical gnomes give personal gardens character. You’re sure to find something in our large selection that expresses your beliefs or personality.
Benches
No garden would be complete without a graceful bench. A bench lends a sense of permanence and provides a spot for rest or reflection.
Planters
Planters may go unnoticed at first, but they are foundational to striking garden décor.
Depending on the materials and designs you choose, you can either go rustic or formal with your outdoor living space. Use color to create a cohesive theme.
Pedestals
These versatile pieces support fountains, birdbaths, planters, carved objects or abstract designs. Anything on a pedestal draws attention.
Where should I place my garden statues?
There are no simple answers to this one, but one thing’s for sure: Statues and their natural surroundings shouldn’t compete.
In a large garden with tall trees and plants, a good-sized statue can take center stage. In a modest garden with more delicate plants, choose a small, unobtrusive piece. It will be a pleasant surprise around a curve or in a nook in the wall.
Consider sunlight during the day and landscape lighting at night. Make sure that flowers, plants or ornamental trees won’t grow so tall that they block the statue from view. Think about how the piece will look from all sides and in other seasons.

How do I clean my outdoor statue?
Aging and weathering add character. Statues needn’t be squeaky clean, but here are some tips for getting rid of excess grime:
• For concrete statues, add 2 ounces of sodium carbonate to a gallon of hot water. Washing soda is sold near the laundry detergents. Mix well.
Spray the statue with a hose. Use a plastic scrub brush to wash it with the soda mixture.
Thoroughly rinse the statue to remove all the soda residue.
• For bronze, remove all the dust first.
Mix warm water and bleach-free dishwashing soap. Use a soft sponge to wash the statue and a clean paintbrush or toothbrush for intricate carvings. Leave the soapy water on the piece for several minutes.
Thoroughly rinse and wipe down the statue. Allow a couple of days for it to dry completely.
To restore the patina, apply a thin layer of wax like Renaissance or Johnson’s. Let the wax sit for at least 30 minutes before buffing the statue with a clean, soft cloth.
• For marble, avoid acidic cleaners that contain vinegar or lemon. They will dull the finish. Use even mild detergent sparingly.
Add half a tablespoon of dishwashing liquid to a gallon of hot water. Wet a soft cloth in the mixture, and gently wipe down the statue. Use a garden hose to remove all the soap, and thoroughly dry the statue with a towel to prevent water marks.
• Porous surfaces invite mold and mildew. Keep the vegetation around your statue trimmed to allow airflow. Consider painting the statue with a zinc oxide primer to prevent problems.
To remove mold and mildew, fill a bucket with 3 quarts of warm water. Add 1/3 cup of mild dish soap, a quart of all-purpose bleach, and 2/3 cup of trisodium phosphate.
Dip a stiff nylon brush into the mixture. Working in small sections and using circular motions, scrub off the stains. Tackle buildup in crevices with a firm toothbrush.
As you finish each section, thoroughly rinse it with clean water before it dries. Allow the statue to air dry.
How much do garden statues cost?
We offer dozens of statues for specific garden sizes, tastes and budgets. You could take home an adorable 5-pound mouse replica for around $11. Our gorgeous 44.5-inch Gabrielle Angel statue sells for around $425.
Prices depend largely on material and size, but there’s something for everybody.

What’s the best kind of fountain to put in my yard or garden?
That depends on your purpose for the fountain.
For example, a cast stone fountain is heavy and durable. It’s intended to be a permanent fixture for years to come. If it’s situated in a prominent place in a formal garden, it serves as the centerpiece and expresses the overall theme.
Because of their longevity, cast stone fountains are sometimes memorials to departed loved ones. They can be engraved for that purpose.
Lightweight fiberglass fountains look just like the real thing, but they’re much easier to clean and occasionally relocate on decks or patios.
Mounted wall fountains lend a restful feel without taking up a lot of space, and they’re easy to install.
It’s best to decide on the fountain’s location before you choose the fountain.
Do outdoor fountains need electricity?
Fountain pumps need power to circulate the water. The two most common sources are solar power and electricity.
Hardwired fountains that draw from an electric power source operate with cables installed by licensed technicians. Extension leads are added if distance is a problem.
How do I keep algae out of my fountain?
To discourage algae growth, be sure that the pump you buy is up to the job. Proper water aeration is the best defense. If your fountain is fairly small, using distilled water will also help.
Every one to three months, turn off the fountain. Using a nonabrasive brush, wash the fountain and all its components with mild soap and water. Take the face off the pump to hose down the inside and remove debris.
If no fish, birds or plants use the fountain, add a capful of bleach to the fresh water after cleaning.
How much does a garden fountain cost?
Again, price depends on the size of the fountain and the material it’s made of. We offer a modest Finch wall fountain for around $200, a free-standing, beautiful boulder fountain for just under $1,500, and fountains of all prices in between.
