Most lawn experts agree; if you fertilize your lawn only once a year, do it in the fall. Grass grows much slower as the weather turns cool, but the grass roots continue to grow quickly. A fall application of fertilizer delivers essential nutrients for the grass to grow deeper roots now and to keep nutrients on reserve for a healthy start next spring.
Benefits of Fall Fertilizer
Fall is the time when cool season grasses recover from summer stresses such as drought, heat, and general usage. If the lawn has been properly fertilized in the fall, turf grass can begin to store carbohydrate reserves. These carbohydrate reserves help grass resist winter injury and disease as well as serve as a source of energy for root and shoot growth the following spring. Fall lawn fertilization will also provide better winter color, enhance spring green up, and increased root development.
Please note that all lawn fertilizers must be applied by October 31st in Suffolk County. Lawn fertilizers are restricted from November 1st thru April 1st.
A fall fertilization for your trees and shrubs is also beneficial. This is when woody plants develop their roots for next year. Providing the necessary nutrients now means that you are setting the plants up for a strong performance next year.

Repair Damaged Areas
Fall is also a great time of the year to fix any damaged areas in the lawn. While the fall air temperatures are cooling off, the soil temperature is still warm from the summer months allowing excellent root development and growth of grass seed.
Keep On Mowing
Continue to water and mow your lawn, as needed, throughout the fall. While you may be able to reduce the frequency of your watering cycle, it is important to continue to provide moisture to your lawn.
